Recording of pianist Irwin Freundlich's lecture at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Topics discussed include: autobiographical anecdotes ; a comparison of Mr. Freundlich's student experiences in the 1930s with those of present NCSA students in the 1970s ; the state of music education in America in the 1930s and 1970s ; music competitions ; developing repertoire ; preparation for a professional career in music ; managers and what they do ; various ways for pianists to make a living ; the gender barrier in music employment ; the immportance of learning about other cultures ; professional relationships between musicians ; what it means to be a mature musician ; student-teacher relationships and the nature of learning music ; the importance of continuous study and learning ; and the importance of choosing a career in music for the right reasons. Mr. Freundlich also reads four of his own poems.
